[Preasantair] Bha dol-a-mach mac-an-duine na chuspair do bhàird san ochdamh linn deug cuideachd. Anns A’ Gheamhradh ’s e teachdaireachd Chrìosdachd gu h-àraidh a tha fa-near do Dhùghall Bochanan.
[Preasantair] Rinn mòran de bhàird na h-ochdamh linn deug òrain mu na ràithean ach tha An Geamhradh eadar-dhealaichte. Tha teachdaireachd na chois. ’S e sin gum feum mac-an-duine tionndadh gu Dia mus bi e ro fhadalach.
[Leughadair] Nis theirig an samhradh’,
’S tha ’n geamhradh teachd dlùth oirnn,
Fìor nàmhaid na chinneas,
Teachd a mhilleadh ar dùthcha,
Ga saltairt fo chasaibh
’S da maise ga rùsgadh;
Gun iochd ann ri dadam,
Ach a’ sladadh ’s a’ plunndrainn.
[An t-Oll. Urr. Ruairidh MacLeòid] Nuair a tha thu a’ tòiseachadh a leughadh a’ phìos bhàrdachd seo chanadh tu gur e dìreach òran a th’ ann mun gheamhradh. A’ chiad sia no ochd ranna, tha mi a’ smaoineachadh, ’s ann dìreach ag innse mu na rudan a bha a’ tachairt anns a’ gheamhradh, mar a bha sneachd a’ tighinn ’s reòthadh ’s rudan a’ searg.
[Leughadair] Sgaoil oirnne a sgiathan,
’S chuir e ghrian air a chùlaibh,
Às an nead thug e ’n t-àlach,
Neo-bhàidheil gar sgiùrsadh;
Sneachd iteagach glè-gheal
O na speuraibh teachd dlùth oirnn,
clacha-meallainn ’s gaoth thuathach,
Mar luaidhe ’s mar fhùdar.
[An t-Oll. Urr. Ruairidh MacLeòid] Ach an uair sin tha e a’ tionndadh anns a’ mhionaid agus tha facal aige ri seann daoine agus tha e ag ràdh seo mar a tha beatha duine – tha an geamhradh a’ tighinn ’s feumaidh tu ullachadh a dhèanamh.
[Leughadair] Ach èist rium, a sheann duin’,
’S tuig an samhla tha ’m stòiridh:
Tha ’m bàs a’ teachd teann ort –
Siud an geamhradh tha ’m òran;
’S ma gheibh e thu ad leisgean,
Gun deasach’ fa chòmhdail,
Cha dèan aithreachas crìche
Do dhìonadh on dòrainn.
An aois ata ’n tòir ort,
Bheir i leòn ort nach saoil thu:
Air do shùilibh bheir ceathach
Is treabhaidh i d’ aodann;
Bheir i crith-reoth’ mud ghruaig
Is neul uaine an aoig leis,
’S cha tig aiteamh na grian ort
Bheir an liath-reoth’ a-chaoidh dhìot.

[Presenter] Mankind’s behaviour was a topic for poets in the eighteenth Century too. In An Geamhradh (The Winter) it is a Christian message that Douglas Buchannan has in mind especially.
[Presenter] Many eighteenth Century poets wrote poems about the seasons but An Geamhradh (The Winter) is different. It contains a message. That is that mankind must turn to God before it is too late.
[Reader] Now the summer flees
And the winter closely approaches us,
A true enemy of all that grows
The approach destroying our country,
Treading under its foot
And the beauty is stripped
Without compassion for anything
But stealing and plundering
[Prof. Rev. Ruairidh MacLeod] When you start reading this piece of poetry you would say that it is just a poem about the winter. The first six or eight verses, I think, they just tell of the things that happen in the winter, how snow comes and frost and things wither.
[Reader] Spread on us a wing
And he put the sun behind him
From the nest he took the brood
Unkindly scourging them;
Pure white feathery snow
O this curse approaches us
Hailstones and northerly wind
Like lead and like powder
[Prof. Rev. Ruairidh MacLeod] But then it suddenly turns and it speaks to old people and it says that this is like a person’s life – the winter is coming and you must prepare.
[Reader] But listen to me, old person
And you’ll understand the similie in my story:
The death is fast approaching for you
That is the winter in my song;
And if you get the hat of a lazy person
Without preparing for the cover
Repentance will not make a border
For saving you from torment.
The age that you are,
It would give you pain that you would not imagine:
Your eyes will become misty
It will develop on your face;
It will give you mildew about your hair
And a green complexion of death,
And the sun will not thaw you
The hoarfrost will take forever from you
